Antalya Foxes Cave

Antalya Foxes CaveLocated in the Manavgat district of Antalya, just north of the Oymapınar Dam, Tilkiler Cave is one of Turkey's most valuable and mysterious underground structures from a speleological (cave science) perspective. Discovered in 1976 during the construction of the Oymapınar Dam, this cave is a fascinating destination for professional cavers and adventure enthusiasts.

The Giant in the Darkness: Tilkiler Cave

Located east of Antalya, within the limestone structure of the Taurus Mountains, Tilkiler Cave, formed over thousands of years, is one of the longest caves in Turkey with a total length of approximately 6,650 meters. This cave, which has a horizontal structure, is an "active" cave; meaning that the formation process and water flow within it are still ongoing.

Discovery and Structural Features

Tilkiler Cave was discovered accidentally during the construction of the dam on the Manavgat River. The cave's most distinctive feature is its large sand deposits and seasonally varying water levels. Sand Halls: In some parts of the cave, there are large sand areas formed by sediments carried by underground rivers. This gives the cave a unique atmosphere different from many other karst formations. Siphons and Lakes: As you progress through the cave, you encounter lakes of varying depth and passages completely filled with water called "siphons." These structures make exploring the entire cave quite difficult.

A Laboratory for Professional Caving

Rather than being a fully illuminated and open structure for general tourism like Damlataş or Karain Caves, Tilkiler Cave is more suitable for professional caving (speleology) activities. Difficulty Level: The water passages and narrow channels within the cave require specialized equipment and professional guidance. Scientific Significance: It is a center frequently studied by scientists to understand the underground water systems of the Taurus Mountains. The connection between the water inside the cave and the springs in the region is still one of the subjects of research.
