Foca / Phokaia
Foça, historically known as Phocaea, is a charming coastal town in İzmir Province, Turkey. Nestled along the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea, this town boasts a rich historical past and scenic beauty.

In ancient times, Phocaea was a prominent Ionian city known for its skilled sailors and navigators. Dating back to around 600 BCE, the Phocaeans were among the ancient world’s most adept mariners, establishing numerous colonies across the Mediterranean and Black Sea, including Massalia (modern Marseille) and Emporion (in northeastern Spain).

Today, Foça is divided into two main sections: Old Foça and New Foça. Old Foça enchants visitors with its narrow cobblestone streets, colorful historic houses, and quaint fishing harbors, offering a nostalgic atmosphere. It is also an excellent starting point for exploring historical landmarks, such as the town’s lighthouse and ancient ruins.

New Foça, on the other hand, is known for its more modern amenities, including expansive beaches, hotels, and resorts. It is particularly popular during the summer months, attracting both domestic and international tourists.

Foça is also notable for its biodiversity. It serves as a crucial habitat for the endangered Mediterranean monk seals, thus it is under special protection. Additionally, the area is a haven for various bird species, making it an attractive destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Visiting Foça offers a perfect blend of historical exploration and relaxation amidst the enchanting natural beauty of the Aegean. Ideal for visits in spring and summer, this quaint seaside town continues to captivate visitors with its historical charm and natural wonders.
