Izmir History and Places to Visit

Izmir History and Places to Visit
Izmir is more than just a city; with its 8500-year-old heritage, it's a living museum harboring the deepest stories of the Aegean. Known throughout its history as Smyrna, this port city is recognized as the capital of tolerance, a blend of different cultures, religions, and languages.

From Past to Future: The History of Izmir

The history of Izmir begins in the Tepekule (Old Smyrna) mound in Bayraklı around 3000 BC. However, the city's major transformation occurred when it moved to the foothills of Kadifekale, based on a dream of Alexander the Great.

Ancient Period:
During the Roman Empire, Smyrna was one of the most important trade and cultural centers of the Asian province, and also held religious significance as it housed one of the seven churches of Christianity.

Ottoman Period:
Entering Ottoman rule in the 15th century, the city became the heart of world trade from the 17th century onwards. Thanks to its identity as a port city, Izmir, where European merchants (Levantines) settled, gained its cosmopolitan structure during this period.

Liberation and Republic:
On September 9, 1922, the city, where the struggle for independence was crowned with victory, rose from the ashes after the great fire with a modern vision and became Turkey's window to the West.
